It turns out we are in the find out phase because people only seem to care about injustice now that it is personally affecting them.
I just watched a video of a Trump supporter saying how his business is in shambles—six of his workers were deported. And they were like “family.” He also stated how one of his friend’s businesses completely shut down because his entire construction crew was deported and detained.
These Trump supporters, many of whom cheered for mass deportations and the erasure of immigrant rights, suddenly found themselves in an unfortunate position. Not because they’d grown a conscience. Not because they’d realized that ripping families apart is immoral. But because they or someone they knew became collateral damage in the very system they voted for.
Turns out Trump lied to them.
Shocker.
He told them he’d only deport “the criminals.” But there’s no functioning system in place to determine that anymore. Due process is gone, and actual oversight is nonexistent. Instead, it’s just inhumane raids and quotas for political points.
He told them he had nothing to do with Project 2025 and that it was just hysteria from the left. But his administration is now enacting it in real time and has completed 42% of its handbook.
He told them prices would go down. They haven’t.
He told them he wouldn’t cut benefits. He is.
He told them they’d be rich. They’re not.
Lie after lie. Word after word. He continues to make a mockery of his own supporters and they continue to cheer him on. It’s painful to watch, not just because of the willful ignorance, but because of the damage it’s causing real people.
And the worst part? Some of these people still only care now because it finally hit home.
How many people have to suffer before folks stop being so selfish? Before they realize their votes, their silence, and their complicity have consequences? You don’t get to pick and choose which humans are “worthy” of your empathy. You don’t get to support policies that hurt people and then act surprised when those same policies come knocking at your door.
This is the America Trump built—and keeps building with your help.
So I ask again:
When will you wake up and admit you were lied to?
When will you realize this man is not your savior he’s your downfall?
And when will you start caring about justice before it affects you?
Because if the only time you find your humanity is when you're the one hurting… then it was never humanity to begin with.
I'm not sure what it's going to take before his supporters get that they've been deceived. A few are, but it's not enough. Others, sadly will follow him over the cliff. Maybe seeing some of the senators finally speaking up will help. Maybe.
I grew up believing what I was taught: "What you do for the least of these, you do for me." I'm not an immigrant, but I care deeply about immigrant rights and due process. I'm not on Medicaid and don't receive SNAP benefits, but I want people who need them to have easy access. And so many more things that don't personally affect me that I still want for the people who need the benefits. Aren't we supposed to take care of each other? Isn't that part of being an American?
